Turbo Tip: Get Over Your Fears and Start Teaching
Excerpt taken from "Rock The House: How to Make Your Classes Feel Like a Party
and Take Your Teaching to the Next Level."
You’ve been practicing and it’s time to start teaching. Time to conquer your
fears and get out there and do it! Most likely, you will be nervous, anxious,
excited and downright scared when you teach your first class. Here’s the good
news: Everyone has those same feelings the first time they teach… everyone!
Classes can be unpredictable, too. More good news: it gets easier! As you become
more comfortable, teaching gets easier and easier! Even if it’s not your first
time teaching group exercise, it can be a nerve-racking experience. If you have
these feelings consider yourself normal. If you don’t, consider yourself
fortunate! The first class is often the hardest then it gets easier and easier
and your confidence will continue to grow. Experience really is the key. Make
sure other instructors know you’re available to sub their classes. The more time
you get on the microphone the better you’ll become. Butterflies and jitters are
natural. Train yourself to use these feelings as a source for more energy! Just
so you know you’re not alone, we’ve included some quotes from other Turbo
Kick™ instructors and a summary of their “first class” experiences:
“I have NEVER EVER taught anything before today. To say I was nervous doesn't
even begin to describe it. What a great high it was.”
- Turbo Kick™ Instructor: Melinda Brown, TN -
“TERRIBLE! I couldn’t remember any combinations. I did jab & jack for about 20%
of the class. When I tried to check my notes, I was so nervous everything was
“magically” converted to a foreign language that I could not decipher at
all. I held patterns for the entire song… luckily they were all brand new to
Turbo and didn’t know the difference!”
- APD for Turbo Kick™ and PiYo™, Turbo Jam™ Cast Member, and Vice President of
Powder Blue Productions: Holly Merritt, CA
“Scaaaarrrrryyyy!!! But, so much FUN! I knew that I wanted to teach, paid or
not, I LOVED IT!!!”
- APD for Turbo Kick™ and PiYo™: Michelle Olsen, UT -
“It was awesome and humbling and killer all at the same time. I thought I was
going to pass out! I was trying to cue everything and I was hardly able to
breath!!”
- APD for Turbo Kick™ and PiYo™, Powder Blue Productions’ Presenter of the Year
in 2005, Turbo Jam™ Cast Member: Mindy Robison, TX -
What will your first teaching experience be like? The beauty of teaching is that
we all have different personalities and styles that will shine through!
Everyone’s been nervous at one time or another. After their first experience,
many instructors contemplated quitting, but stuck it out and became “the super
stars of Turbo”! Each class is an opportunity to perfect your craft. Take
advantage of it! Believe in yourself and your ability to teach! Relax, have fun
and don’t sweat the small stuff.
Pointers to Help You Overcome Your Fears
Helen Garbuzov, from Michigan, said that one of her fears was learning the first
Round. There seemed to be so much to learn. Her advice: “for all new instructors
that are having a hard time learning their first round… it WILL become easier as
you gain experience”. One of Helen’s teaching hints is that once you learn the
section order of the Round choreography, each successive Round becomes easier to
memorize. (Tip: Although the actual choreography changes from Round to Round,
the sections are always in the same order.) There is usually some amount of fear
or anxiety when trying new things, however, this is your time to shine! Close
your eyes and jump on in!
Here’s some advice for new Turbo Kick™ instructors from Summer McArthur, Turbo
Kick™ Gold Certified Instructor, CA:
Teaching in an area and at the very clubs with the likes of Anna Rita and Turbo
Kick™ Creator, Chalene, I knew that if I had any chance of standing out I had
some work ahead of me. So I practiced and practiced and practiced and practiced.
Mic on, music cranked in an empty room – for months. Four months to be exact.
Taking the time to really perfect cueing and layering before teaching is the
best approach I could have taken. It’s the number one piece of advice I
would give any new instructor.
Summer began by subbing as many Turbo Kick™ classes as she could. Then, one day,
Chalene called and asked her to sub one of her classes. Summer rose to the
challenge and knocked their socks off! She now has quite a following of her own!
This is just a taste of what Rock the House has to offer!
Thanks for your support! We need you. We appreciate
your business and we will do whatever it takes to keep you
happy! Best regards,
Chalene Johnson
